The Renderers Japan Tour

New Zealand band The Renderers are coming to Japan for some shows in Tokyo, Kyoto and Matsumoto.

Described as deep, dark and psychedelic, The Renderers have released 11 albums in a career spanning almost 3 decades. From their first release in 1990 on New Zealand label Flying Nun Records, to the title track on Chicago’s Drag City Records New Zealand music sampler “I Hear the Devil Calling Me” to releases on legendary Philadelphia based Siltbreeze and New York’s Ba Da Bing Records, they have splattered their music across the best and the most underground of labels. The Renderers served briefly as Bonnie Prince Billy’s backing band, and he paid tribute to them with his cover of the title track of their 1998 album A Dream of the Sea, on his More Revery release, which was this year re-issued on vinyl.

Friday, Sept 30

There are a few good gigs on Friday night to kick off the weekend.

• At O-Nest in Shibuya, the American indie-rock band Yuck will be supported by Kyoto indie-pop group Homecomings (details).
• Over at Shimokitazawa Three, you can see some local pop bands for free, including Jappers, Wanna-Gonna and Luby Sparks. Judy, who appeared at Farm Party 15, will be DJing (details).
• Tropical Death, who rocked last month's Farm Party are performing at Varit in Roppongi (details).

Saturday, Oct 1

Where do we start for Saturday night? There's too much going on but here are a few of the highlights.

• Shelter in Shimokitazawa has two LOUD gigs planned on Saturday as part of its 25th anniversary. During the day you can catch the mighty Guitar Wolf paired with the explosive DMBQ (details), and in the evening you can experience the noise god Masonna (details).
• For something a bit more laid-back, there's a nice little festival on at Shirahama Flower Park in Chiba called Beach Tomato Noodle featuring a bunch of bands like Boys Age, who played Tokyo Gig Guide's Halloween Party last year, alongside Tempalay and Gi Gi Giraffe (details).
• I'm afraid Morrissey's show at Yokohama Ball Hall is sold out!
• Never fear, there's so much good stuff happening at 20000 den-atsu in Koenji for Koenji Pop Festival. You can see some cool bands from the fringes of pop like BUMBUMS, luveless and lo-shi, who played Farm Party 15 (details).
• Back at O-Nest in Shibuya, there's a diverse collection of artists playing, from the post-rock group Soha to the Lightning Bolt-esque Moja and the electronic duo Young Juvenile Youth (details).
• Twelve new wave, experimental, punk and weirdo bands including Compact Club, The Dead Pan Speakers and GROUNDCOVER. will be destroying Shimokitazawa Three (details).
• For some improvised sounds, Pool in Sakuradai is hosting the Australian ensemble Golden Fur with guests (details).

Sunday, Oct 2

If you have any money left, there are still plenty of things happening on Sunday night.

• Let's start with the loud ones. Noise legends Hijokaidan are playing at Akihabara Goodman along with their WTF vocaloid project Hatsune Kaidan (details).
• For hardcore and other cores, head to Hugo in Umejima for MEKARE-KARE, Horse & Deer, cunts and a swathe of other wild groups (details).
• Continuing with the unorthodox sounds, free-jazz outfit Kiyasu Orchestra, who played at Space Fête 3, are putting on a show at Forestlimit in Hatagaya with Gloptin x PUNSUCA, DJ Memai x L?K?O and more (details).
• Some other odd artists are gathering at Loft in Shinjuku for Fuzz'em All Fest. See Ruins alone, JON (the dog), TsuShiMaMiRe and more (details).
• A bit quieter but no less weird, the folk legend Kazuki Tomokawa is performing over at Graffiti in Akasaka (details).
• German improvised jazz saxophonist Peter Brötzmann will be joined by some distinguished Japanese guests at Super Deluxe (details).
• Or if you prefer to just chill out, Morgan Fisher is playing some meditation music at his home studio (details).

Rehearsal studios for 'studio live' in Tokyo

Renting live houses to organise gigs in Tokyo can be expensive. Therefore, a popular alternative for smaller gigs is to do a 'studio live',  a casual kind of event held in a rehearsal studio room. Of course it is a bit cramped, but the sound is usually good and everyone can bring their own drinks.

Sound Studio DOM, Koenji
Events are regularly held at this very punk studio, usually in their larger room, but also in the smaller ones. They also have a rooftop area where you can drink and have barbecues. You basically pay the hourly rental price plus 900 yen for staff.

Studio Zot, Asagaya

They have a nice large room that you can use for gigs. It's basically 4000 yen per hour with a minimum of 5 hours. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station though.

Rinky Dink Studios
This rehearsal studio chain allows studio live events in some of their locations. You'll need to call them for details.

Some of this chain's studios have rooms set up for gigs.

They have live spaces called Attack (48) and Music Inn 50 respectively, although at about 7000 to 8000 yen an hour, it doesn't end up much cheaper than booking an actual live house.

Shibuya
These spaces are more reasonable than the Shinjuku and Akihabara ones, at about 4000 to 5000 yen an hour.

Maldic Studio, Kita-Sando
This place which is not far from Yoyogi station allows live events in one of its studios for around 3000 yen an hour.

Bass on Top, Nakano

This studio at Nakano Sun Plaza has a large room for 4200 to 4500 yen an hour.

Gateway Studio, Shibuya
At 6000 yen an hour including 2 staff members to help with the PA, you can organise gigs here.

Little Monster, Shinjuku-Gyoen
This place has very reasonable prices (15000 to 19000 total) for mini live shows.

Studio Bayd, Shimokitazawa
This place seems to work somewhat like a live house.

A lot of other rehearsal studios with a big enough room will allow studio live events. Just discuss it with them. Here are a few that have allowed live events before:

Super gig weekend - 28th & 29th May

This weekend is another super weekend for gigs, especially Saturday (May 28th).

First, there are these 3 cool little festivals happening:

SHIMOKITAZAWA SOUND CRUISING

A ticket to this annual event lets you wander around the Shimokitazawa district and pop in and out of all its important live houses. You can check out lots of established and up-and-coming Japanese indie bands like Lucky Tapes, Homecomings, Learners, Lostage, Paellas, avengers in sc-fi, Fukurouzu, Halfby and plenty more. The daytime part opens at 14:00 and costs 4500 yen and the night part opens at 23:00 and costs 3000 yen, or you can pay 5900 yen to go to both.

OOO! vol. 5

This is a crazy collection of noise artists mixed in with some punk, electronic and other kinds of bands held from 3 pm to 5 am at the Shinjuku JAM live house and studios. And it's only 2500 yen! CRAFTROCK FESTIVAL

This craft beer festival held in Toyosu features some great local bands like clammbon, group_inou, toe and eastern youth, alongside beers from the likes of Baird, Brewdog and Coedo. It opens at 11:00 and tickets will set you back 6800 yen.

Goodbye Enemy Airship Japan Tour

The enchanting instrumental band Goodbye Enemy Airship from Melbourne in Australia will be in Tokyo this month for a short tour.



Catch them on Sunday September 21st at Ruby Room for Tokyo Gig Guide's regular Farm Party event. They will be joined by Tokyo indie-rock group Naisho and psychedelic electro-pop trio Servals, as well as DJ trio Hippo Disco and DJ Grant McGaheran.

Members of Goodbye Enemy Airship are involved in numerous other groups as diverse as stoner rock group Tetris Nightmare! and experimental jazz trio Maka Khan.

April 25 - Tokyo Gig Guide presents Farm Party 11

On Friday April 25th, come down to Ruby Room in Shibuya for the 11th Farm Party gig organised by Tokyo Gig Guide.
It will be a special night as it's the 10th year anniversary show of Farm Party regulars Abikyokan and quite possibly their last gig with their singer Jake before he moves back to the States. Also playing will be the noise-pop duo Slowmarico who appeared at Farm Party 9, and Servals featuring Kohei and Emily whose other band Come To My Party appeared at Farm Party 8.  Farm Party DJs Roodmin (Hippo Disco) and Grant McGaheran will be getting people dancing along with special guest DJs hitch and Goatherd.
It kicks off at 6:30 and costs only 1000yen plus a drink.

Anyone can add gigs!

This has been a feature of Tokyo Gig Guide for a couple of years now, but it seems that a number of users don't realise that anyone can add gigs to the site.
If you find any gigs that you think should be listed on Tokyo Gig Guide, you are free to add them. Or if you want to promote your band or event, it's easy to add your gigs to Tokyo Gig Guide in English or Japanese.

First you need to register to the site. Don't worry - it's quick and free. You'll find a Login/Join link on the top right of the site. Click that, and on the next page click Register. Fill in your details, pass the simple picture spam check thing, and then you will get a link in your email inbox to confirm your registration.

Okay, once you are logged in, an Add a Gig link will appear in the top right. Click on that and a gig submission form will appear. Fill in that and voilà!


A few tips:

• Do a quick search to make sure the gig is not already on the site.



• Let's imagine you are adding a gig titled "Kicking Buckets vol.1" with three bands playing. If you only put "Kicking Buckets vol.1" in the gig title, that's all that will appear on the Gig Guide main page, and as people don't recognise it, they will be unlikely to click it. But if you put the band names in the title, people will be far more likely to click the link to your gig's page. Please remember to add the names of all the artists playing the gig.



• The more information you can give, the better. In the details box, try to include links to the homepages of the artists and any helpful information.



• Include an image. Upload the flyer for the event or a picture of one of the main artists.



• If you are not sure about any section of the Add a Gig page, hover over the little light bulb icon next to each section and it will explain everything. Instructions are also included at the bottom of the page.



• If you need to later edit any gigs you have added, when logged in, click the little Edit Event icon () next to the word Event at the top of your gig's page.

Earthquake & cancellations

Due to the earthquake and tsunami, power usage is being limited and transportation still hasn't returned to normal in Tokyo. A number of gigs have been cancelled. If you're planning to go to any gigs in the next couple of weeks, check the websites of the venues, promoters and bands to see if it has been cancelled. The kanji to look for is 中止. Contact the venues or promoters for details of ticket refunds.
